Spring 2002

We started out at Arches National Park, where we did some cool hikes.

The boys did really well - hiking for long stretches in a rather hot climate.  In a lot of ways, southern Utah reminds us of Israel. If Mark's the talker, Luke is the walker.  We all had trouble catching up.  Watch out future IBEX groups!

One of the park's main attractions is Delicate Arch.  It's so remarkable it's on the state license plates.  We of course didn't have a clue; we just wanted to hike some where and it said this was beautiful at sunset.  (Notice the people at the bottom.) Luke and I did the hike together.  It's a trip we'll remember a long time (and not for bad reasons; just an experience).  I juxtapose these two pictures like this because I really wanted the Luke shot, but you needed to see the arch in perspective also.

The next day we went to Canyonlands National Park.  It's a very beautiful park as well, but would be better with 10+ year old boys and a week for hiking.  This is Mesa Arch. Here we sit in front of Mesa Arch.  If Todd looks nervous that's because there's a sheer drop of about 934,293,325 feet right behind them.

Here's a couple of scenic shots.  Todd easily got enough beautiful pictures to make a great calendar.  Of the 40 states he's visited, Todd considers Utah the most beautiful.

On the way home (insert Lake Powell trip in between Canyonlands and Bryce), we visited a couple of other national parks (it just so happened to be "free" weekend, thanks to Mr. Bush, so we saved $40 also.)  This is Bryce Canyon.  You need to see this. Here we are.  It was quite an adventurous day, we could add.  In one day alone, we were 1) at Lake Powell, 2) visited three national parks (Capitol Reef, Bryce, Zion), 3) drove through one national monument (Grand Staircase Escalante), 4) drove on every kind of road, paved or not, 5) toured a couple of Nevada cities, late at night, including Vegas (no room in the inn), and 6) drove home (well, that was technically another day).

The boys got tired of looking at hodoos (those spire-looking things at Bryce) and started climbing the fence. This is Zion.  Very beautiful park.  Not much time to see it on this day unfortunately.
