Putting the Collection on a Hard Drive, Network, or DVD

In a previous issue, we suggested that you install the Pictorial Library of Bible Lands on your hard drive.  There are several advantages to this:

  1. No need to swap CDs
  2. Faster use, as hard drives are much quicker than CDs
  3. Less risk of damage to the CDs

This summer, at the initiative of Shelby Cantley of Anderson University, we created an easy install setup for hard drives and computer networks (assuming, of course, that the proper licenses are owned).  This essentially ties all of the CDs together, so you can access them all via a single "web page" (html page) without jumping back and forth between disks.  You could also use this same setup to create a DVD from your CDs, if you don't have the hard disk space.  All 10 CDs will fit on one dual-layer DVD.

Don't do this if 1) you only use the PowerPoint files, as there is not a significant advantage; 2) you are not comfortable copying and extracting zip files in Windows Explorer; 3) you don't have the Kregel edition, as previous versions have different folders and files and it won't work; 4) you have a Mac OS earlier than 10.2, because the filenames are truncated; 5) you are putting this on a multi-user network but don't have the correct license.  To purchase a network license, contact the publisher, Kregel Publications.

If you are interested, the steps are simple:

  1. Download PLBL1.zip and PLBL2.zip
  2. Unzip PLBL1.zip into desired installation folder (e.g., Pictorial Library of Bible Lands). This will create 10 folders. [This simply saves you the time of creating and correctly naming the folders.]
  3. Copy the contents of each CD into its corresponding folder (e.g., Vol 1 Galilee into "1 Galilee and the North"). When asked about replacing files, select "yes."
  4. Unzip PLBL2.zip into the installation folder chosen in step #2. When asked about replacing files, select "yes" each time or "yes to all". This will over-write some existing files with updated files.
  5. Click "startup.htm" in installation folder to start. (You may want to create a shortcut to this file.)

If you have already copied the CDs onto your hard disk, but desire the single access web page, do the above steps except for #3.  You can save time by copying the files from the corresponding folders on your hard disk instead of from the CD.  Note: It will not work to use your own folders unless they are named exactly the same as in the install files (which are created in step #2).

How much space will this take?  The current 10-volume CD set will require about 6.5 GB.  If you only use the PowerPoint files, you can get by with about one-third of that.

This will work even if you do not own all of the 10 volumes.  The links to all of the volumes you own will work correctly; links to files on CDs that you do not have obviously won't work.
